Another Tree

In front of another building.  I seem to like these images of buildings that are fronted by architecturally strong trees.  This one seems to almost embrace the building with its sturdy, stocky limbs and their top hats of greenery.  Both reaching for the sky, as we all should.  If only…

Last Light

It was a lovely balmy day, and we had an early dinner.  When we emerged, the sun was about to set, and the play of the light on this high-rise seemed subtly beautiful.  The angles and the stripes and the dark and light and the greenery are nice too.  Spring evening in San Diego…

Condo Art

In the other building (we are twin towers, ugh?)  I left the leaf there because it was there (from a nearby plant), and because it looks like a finger pointing at the woven wall sculpture.  The copper is elegant in its simplicity.  I like the bouncing of the light, the black background, the strength/thickness/loose spacing of the elements of the weave (warp and weft) and even the proportions.  Not square and just barely rectangular enough.  I’m not often in the other tower, but if I were, this would please me every time I walked by!

When in Doubt

…try a night shot.  there’s always drama and a bit of contrast.  I like the dot of blue light.  Blue seems to show up as an accent pretty often.  There’s mystery and comfort too in night shots — when there is light somewhere.  There has to be light.  There must be light.  Even now.  Especially now.

Public Art

On the back of an art supply store.  Really lovely and striking.  I look at stylized work like this and wonder why something even vaguely similar isn’t in my repertoire.  I guess I’ve not really tried to develop it.  My art comes from the inside out; I admire those who do representational drawing, for their seeing ability and their draftsmanship.  Good thing I live in these times; making art now seems a much wider, broader endeavor than it was before the 1860s!

Fireworks

At the harbor, but seen from our building.  There’s an aircraft carrier museum, the Midway, in the harbor near Broadway Pier.  There are often parties and events there, so fireworks can happen on seemingly random evenings.  This was the view from our third level common patio area.  The sky glow is a bit eerie, looking almost as if it’s a fire behind the lit building.  The white orb is not a super-moon, but rather the dome of a building.  I like the repetition and variety of shapes, with that bit of blue glow just below the center.  The lighting of the foliage is strange.  All the lighting is strange — feels a bit like a still from a sci-fi movie.  ‘Twas a lovely evening…

Flowers in the Rain

White skies all day and, finally, the rain.  The darks and lights in this photo are once again what draws me, even though the lights are mostly the pale salmon-pink rather than white.  The sparkle of the flash reflecting off the wet green leaves is delicious.  Once again, I take these photos with my phone, having little idea of what might or might not be appealing.  The air was soft and warm and comforting, too; it was a gentle rain, all too brief.  More tomorrow, I hope.

Jacaranda High

From bare branches to early spring blossoms.  I didn’t know jacaranda came in anything but purple, but our building manager told me that this early bloomer was one of three planted in our large common courtyard; the other two are purple and white.  I love the name “jacaranda” and hadn’t seen one until we moved here.  They are truly glorious in full bloom.  Pink went first!

Sorta Winter

Rain and bare branches and shiny pavement and wet cars and damp air and even a bit of wind.  It didn’t last long enough.  We could use a week or two of this.  I wouldn’t complain.  Besides, it’s cozy to be indoors and make soup and bake and just nest in.

Rain, Real Rain

This is the first entry in the new blog, as the old one was having technical difficulties.  All washed away by today’s delightful light steady rain, much needed and appreciated.

White sky.  Blurred buildings.  Dark, wet street surfaces.  Windshield wipers, tires swishing  wetly.  Umbrellas and hoodies.  Bent heads.  Humidity.  Soft air.  I like it.
